As most of you know, our
basement was flooded on Labour Day. Water came in through the kitchen end
of the building and the sewers backed up at the other end, flowing down
the steps and into and on to the floor of the main fellowship area. As a
result, the damage to the basement walls and floors was quite extensive.
The "demolition" phase of the project involved removing tiles, carpet,
plaster and drywall, cupboards, sinks, etc. As that work unfolded, several
problems arose which delayed the start of the reconstruction. At present,
the best estimate for a return to the finished basement is somewhere
around the middle to the end of March, 2010.
Other than the deductible and our “upgrades” to the building, our
insurance will cover the entire cost of the restoration ("restoration" |
means that the basement will
be put back into its original condition--at least as far as is possible).
The term “upgrades” refers primarily to plans we have to improve the
kitchen, making it more user-friendly and efficient.
A small committee under the leadership of Karl Van Spronsen has been
meeting regularly and working diligently since October trying to
coordinate the requirements of the insurance company, the tasks of the
restoration company, the concern expressed by the congregation (and our
various user-groups) to return to the basement as soon as possible. .
.plus the understandable and admirable desire of the committee to make
certain that the finished product is not only pleasing to the eye and
cost-effective but functional and durable for decades to come. |
